The bioeconomy or bio-based economy is believed by the EU as the kick-starter of a new era after the industrial revolution. In May, China's top economic regulator, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), unveiled a plan to spur bioeconomy development in the country by 2025. According to the plan, China will take steps to boost biotechnological innovation, accelerate the development of bio-healthcare products, bio-energy and biological environmental protection technologies.
