Settling on a name for your cleaning company can seem like a very difficult task. Nine times out of ten you end up choosing a name for your company before you can really get a feel for what your company is about. As you and your company evolve, your vision may change. You may start to notice that your name no longer reflects your company well. In this episode Mike is going to get into how to fix your name, as well as why it’s so important to have a name that reflects your ideals.
If you don’t choose a good name for your company, it can lead to a lack of alignment with your customers and employees. Mike’s first company had a name that he felt no connection to, and he felt terrible every time he said it. His next company he named ‘Killer Shade’. He felt like that name better reflected himself and his core values, and was also much more memorable to his clients. As you start to grow as a company, you will really start to need a name that resonates with your clients.
One mistake that companies commonly make is naming their companies around themselves, rather than around their customers. The truth is that your customers want to talk about their pain, not yours. “Mike’s Cleaning Company” does not properly convey to your customers your company's core values, and revolves completely around 'Mike'. ‘Grow my Cleaning Company’ tells you exactly what the company is about, and what clients he's serving - cleaning company owners.
Another myth that can be detrimental to business owners is the idea that the name of your company doesn't matter. If you think about the word ‘Walmart’ the first thing that comes to mind is 'cheap'. If you think about the words ‘Mercedes Benz’ you think 'luxury' or 'expensive'. Having a strong name is incredibly important, more so than many people may realize. Having a name that clearly represents what your company is about is imperative to its success and growth.
So should you change your name? Changing your name first requires that you really nail down what your company is. Oftentimes not wanting to change your names stems from fear. In reality, changing your name is nothing to be afraid of. It’s not something that has to happen overnight. Focusing on getting things like setting up your new domain and website is much more important than trying to suddenly replace your old one. Think of it as phasing out your old name, and let it happen gradually. While it may be difficult to nail down the right name, in the long run it is very much worth making the effort to choose, and then change, the right name for YOUR Cleaning Company.
