100-Mile Walking Challenge: My Journey
Day 1: The Beginning of a Tough AdventureI set off just before 4 a.m., the world around me still pitch black. The quiet, early morning made me feel calm, even though I knew the next few days would be far from easy. My food bag was swinging side to side, and there was an uphill start to the day, which set the tone for what lay ahead.
I met some self-storage workers early on, and one of them shared a heartbreaking story about his son taking his life at 22. It was a reminder of why I was doing this, and I pushed on with a deeper sense of purpose.
The first 12 miles felt tough but manageable, and I could tell it was going to be a long journey. By mile 18, I was starting to slow, and by mile 22.5, I felt like I could barely keep my eyes open. The road felt like a dangerous place to be a pedestrian, especially with all the lorries, tractors, and buses speeding past. I found a bus stop to take a break, only to realise that my sign had snapped in half. A little deflated but still determined, I hopped on the bus and was greeted by a friendly driver who, after hearing about my challenge, let me ride for free.
After checking into the hotel, I thought I could rest, but I still managed to walk another 1.2 miles to get some dinner at a lively burger bar. The music was nice, but it wasn’t exactly the quiet, calming atmosphere I needed. After a hot bath, I called it a night, ready for the next leg of the journey.
