The Trains and Landscapes of the Chiltern Line.
The Chiltern Line heads north west through the Chiltern Hills from it’s London terminus at Marylebone. The main line serves destinations in Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire with some services reaching Birmingham Snow Hill, Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford and Kidderminster. There is also a secondary route to Aylesbury which shares tracks with the London Underground network along part of the route. Beyond Aylesbury the line become a freight only link serving the terminal at Calvert which passes through the closed station at Quainton Road, home to the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre.
Passenger services are operated by Chiltern Railways using a variety of diesel multiple units supplemented by long distance loco hauled services powered by Class 68 locomotives hired from DRS. The current DMU fleet consists of 39 Class 165 Networker Turbo sets, 24 Class 168 Clubman sets and 4 Class 172 Turbostar sets.
The only regular freights over the route are domestic waste “binliner” and spoil trains destined for the Calvert Landfill Site.
During the Autumn the annual Rail Head Treatment Train (RHTT) runs over sections of the Chiltern Line and is currently operated by Freightliner using Class 66s in top and tail mode.
