Tropical tuber crops namely Elephant foot yam, Greater yam, Potato, Tannia and Sweet potato play a major role in the socio-economic condition of small and marginal farmers of tribal areas of Gujarat region in context of food and nutrition security. It not only provides foods but also helps to earn income which is beneficial for poor people also. Tuber crops are known as the energy banks of nature and meet the calorie demand of about one fifth of world’s population. Diverse agro climatic condition, varied soil and wide regional variation suited the cultivation of tropical tuber crops. There has been active industrial utilization like production of sweeteners, modified starches, fermented products (foods, beverages, alcohol, organic acids etc.) which are technologically possible and further attempts need to be made to refine economical and technical feasibility of these processes. It can be grown in marginal soils, act as a cover crop, helps to reduce soil erosion and also useful as intercrops which helps in earning of additional income also. Therefore, there is a great importance of scientific cultivation practices of important tuber crops.
