After reaching Pangpema at Kanchenjunga North, we crossed over Selele Pass (actually four passes in total) to reach Tseram along the Simbuwa River. We would follow the course of the river, towards the Yarlung Glacier, to the lone teahouse at Ramche.
Ramche was the most desolate of all the accommodation. From here it was less than 2 hours to Oktang, the last viewpoint of Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. On return we headed back to Cheram after a lunch stop in Ramjer.
From here it was all downhill, taking 2 days, with a night in Torangdin, to reach the trailhead at Ranipul - we did not take the popular route to Yamphudin - from where 2 jeeps met us. We drove to Bhadrapur same way we came but, instead, stayed at Phidim and Kanyam. This was to facilitate easier access to Chandrigagh airport for our flight to Kathmandu.

In Episode 1, we flew from Kathmandu to Chandrigadi Airport, Bhadrapur, in far east Nepal. From there, it was two and a half days' drive by jeep through Kanyam, Ilam, Phidim, and Taplejung (Phungling), to Sekathum. We trekked for 4 days through Amjilosa, Gyabla, Phale, to end in Ghunsa, a relative paradise, where we had a day's acclimatization.
Episode 2 sees the team, after 2 nights in Ghunsa, trekking through Khambachen and Lhonak, to Pangpema, or Kanchenjunga Base Camp North. Mindful of the gain in altitude, we spent a day each acclimatizing in Khambachen (climbing to Jannu viewpoint) and Lonak. We then made the journey back to Ghunsa, in time for Tihar celebrations with the village schoolchildren.
In late-Oct 2023, the group met in Kathmandu. Eastern Nepal is an area known for its tea and cardomom plantations. Food and lodging were immediately more basic as we left Taplejung, until we arrived in Ghunsa.
