British Prime Minister Boris Johnson held a press conference Friday where he defended his government's targetted local lockdowns approach to suppress the spread of COVID-19 in areas seeing an increase in infections.
"Some argue we should've introduced a national lockdown, I disagree," Johnson said.
He added that the decisions to impose lockdowns on some areas where cases are rising were not easy to make, and thanked local authorities for cooperating.
Johnson's government imposed a tiered system of further restrictions on parts of England on Monday, including shutting pubs and bars, as the COVID-19 outbreak accelerates.
The lockdowns took place in areas placed into the "Very High" alert level from Wednesday. The other levels in the new system are "Medium" and "High".
The Prime Minister also touched on Brexit talks with European Union leaders at the EU Summit taking place in Belgium, saying the EU "is not willing" to consider a Canada-style trade agreement with the U.K. after Brexit.
The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the EU and Canada gets rid of almost all tariffs on goods between the two parties, which Johnson is hoping to get.
The U.K. has a total of over 676,000 COVID-19 cases and more than 43,000 deaths.
