In today's rowing tutorial, Coach Walton addresses the common mistake of shooting the slide and how to correct it for a more efficient stroke. Shooting the slide occurs when your leg press at the front end of the stroke isn't matched with a strong, connected core, leading to a disconnect between your feet and handle. This results in your seat moving rapidly across the slide while the handle lags behind, disrupting the drive phase and causing unnecessary strain on your back (once it engages)
To tackle this issue, Coach Walton provides you with two effective drills: the legs only drill and the body over pause drill. The legs only drill ensures synchronized movement of the seat and handle, fostering a stable and powerful hang and press during the drive. The body over pause drill emphasizes a prepared, stable core at the catch, allowing the handle and seat to move together smoothly, ensuring optimal connection and power.
