You’re in a sort of confrontation. The other party gets really aggressive, you are avoiding all that aggression and defending yourself. Something breaks and it is something the aggressor owns. What to do if you retaliated and damaged property? Of course, the aggressor sues. The police will get involved and the courts eventually to determine if the force involved was appropriate. Make no mistake about it, you can always be sued. During trial you will have to declare facts. You did break something. And damage was not intentional but a result of defending yourself. The court can find the force applied to defend yourself is justified and free you from paying for damages. Then again, it is clearly for the court and the jury to deliberate on.
