Humans and dogs have coexisted together for between 2,000 and 3,000 years, according to estimates. Although historical records do not give a certain date, it is generally accepted that wolves were first domesticated between 20,000 and 30,000 years ago. This is due to the fact that wolves, the forerunners of modern domestic dogs, underwent physical and psychological development to become amiable companions. Today's most well-known dog breeds are from the 18th and 19th centuries in large part. Surprisingly, though, some breeds have endured for thousands of years and have developed alongside humans while retaining some of their basic characteristics and physical traits.
