In this video, I would like to share how Sankranti is celebrated especially in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Though living out of India, I always follow and teach my kids our traditions and customs.
Makar Sankranthi is a Hindu festival that is celebrated on 14th January in different parts of the country according to their customs and traditions. It is known as the Indian harvest festival or agriculture festival.
It is observed each year the day Sun enters the Capricorn zodiac which corresponds with the month of January as per the Gregorian calendar. It marks the first day of the sun's transit into Makara rashi (Capricorn), marking the end of the month with the winter solstice and the start of longer days.
Sankranti is usually celebrated for 3 to 4 days, with a series of rituals associated with each day.
Kite Flying - The sky is filled with colorful kites during the day and sky lanterns at night.
Folk songs and dances around the campfire, which is called “Bhogi” in Andhra Pradesh, “Lohri” in Punjab and “Magh Bihu” in Assam.
Harvest crops such as new rice and sugar cane.
People bathe in holy rivers, especially in Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri. It is believed that this washes away past sins.
Offering prayers for success and prosperity to the sun god, who is a symbol of divinity and wisdom.
Some of the greatest pilgrimages in the world such as "Kumbha Mela", "Gangasagar Mela" and "Makara Mela" take place.
Exchange of jaggery and til (sesame) foods, which keep the body warm and provide oil that is needed when winter dries out the moisture from the body.
Though the customs and rituals differ from state to state, the purpose of celebration behind it is the same. On this harvest festival, I wish and pray that no one starves and wastes a single grain which is hard earned by our farmers. I would like to thank all the farmers who are feeding us sinces ages. Farmers are the heart of India and I wish for their well being and prosperity .
