It was simply a crime to be on the streets of Victorian London and not be able to account for yourself and means of subsistence in the Victorian era – and, if having nothing to your name wasn't punishment enough – falling foul of the Vagrancy Act by sleeping rough could land you in prison for three months. Thus many a poor soul was forced to wander the streets at night in a constant state of stupor and exhaustion, in an attempt to find a hiding place to evade the police and in anticipation of respite in a park by day. In this video you will hear a first-hand account from Jack London of his attempts to find a place to sleep, whilst avoiding the police.
