In March of 2002 Operation Anaconda began. It was one of the first large-scale operations to take place in Afghanistan for the War on Terror. Members of 10th Mountain Divisions 4th Bn. 31st Inf. Reg. along with Canadian forces would be dropped into the Shahi-Kot Valley. Their objective was an area that would become known as the "Whaleback", " The Whale's Back" or just simply "The Whale" because of its topographical resemblance to a whale's back, genius right. 20+ years later and that time of my life still feels like yesterday. As I am sure for many of my brothers and sisters on here even though it was a lifetime ago we are still "Scaling the Whale" in our minds.
This one is for all those who paid the ultimate price , who served, and are still serving in the military. Whether you supported the war or not, these men and women are/were our mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, cousins, nephews, nieces, grandparents, and grandkids...they are our family...they should be remembered.
When writing this song I was trying to remember the emotions of a young 19 year old kid who found himself going to basic training in a time of relative peace and by the time it was done we were at war and found himself being deployed to the front lines in a country he had never given any thought to. By the end the kid had died, and who came home was not the person that everyone had known.
