Top Sights to Visit In Calgary, AB 🇨🇦 | Best of Downtown Calgary | First Time Visiting | Staying at Hyatt Regency Calgary
For this episode, we are taking you from San Diego, CA to Calgary, a metropolitan city in Alberta Canada. This city is less than two hours away from Banff (Bamf) National Park, a place we’ve been wanting to visit because it has been one of our dream destinations.
Since Calgary deserves more than a quick stop on our way to Banff, we decided to spend couple of days in this city to check out their must-see places.
We are now on our way to the hotel, and we will be staying at Hyatt Regency Calgary Downtown. This hotel is a consistent traveler’s choice because it is situated in the heart of downtown and close to Calgary’s top attractions.
We are finally here and our check in process went very smoothly. We noticed that the hotel has a rodeo set-up, so we asked them why. We found out that Calgary Stampede festival is happening in the city which is quite a big event each year drawing thousands of visitors from around the globe. This is a 10-day event Western style extravaganza which is one of Canada’s largest and famous festivals.
Just a fun fact about Calgary Canada during summer. Do you know their sunset is around 10:00PM and sunrise is 5:30AM? The sudden change of time zone has a dramatic shift in our body clock, but we were able to adjust relatively easy.
During our visit, the weather in Calgary was in the high 70’s so it’s perfect for us to hit the ground and visit some of their top attractions. Our first stop was Calgary Tower which is a stone throw away from Hyatt Regency hotel.
Calgary Tower is a 626 feet free-standing observation tower originally called the Husky Tower. This tower opened to the public in 1968 as the tallest structure in Calgary and the tallest in Canada outside Toronto. The tower was built at a cost of $3.5M Canadian dollars. This tower underwent significant renovations between 1987 and 1990. It so awesome to experience this breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the city overlooking the majestic Rocky Mountains. Make sure you don’t miss this top attraction when visiting the city of Calgary.
Prince’s Island Park is an oasis which sits in the Bow River and is connected to the north and south banks of the river by footbridges. This park is a popular destination for city residents because it offers something for everyone. One of their amenities is childen’s playground so we decided to give Abby some play time while enjoying the open green spaces of this beautiful park.
You are now seeing what is known as Stephen Avenue Walk which is a pedestrian mall. Occupying three blocks of downtown’s 8th avenue, Stephen Avenue Walk is one of the city’s most popular shopping venues. This serves as a cultural hub, tourist attraction, a business district and a vibrant place situated in the heart of Calgary.
Prominently displayed in front of the Bow building on 6th Avenue is a 39-foot tall bent-wire statue of a young girl’s head. This sculpture was created by artist Jaume Plensa. The portrait represents hope and our potential as humans fostered by our dreams. This is very large and eye catching especially at night.
Here’s the exterior of the Calgary tower. In 2014, an LED multicolor exterior lighting system was added. Since its addition, this became more noticeable part of the city skyline at night.
Peace Bridge is a bridge that accommodates people walking and cycling across the Bow River in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The bridge was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and opened in 2012.
The City of Calgary built the bridge to connect the southern Bow River pathway and Downtown Calgary with the northern Bow River pathway and the community of Sunnyside. This connection was designed to accommodate the increasing number of people commuting to and from work and those utilizing Calgary's pathways.
