This work was commissioned by the ESO in 2016 as part of John McPherson’s tenure as Composer-in-residence. It received funding from Canada Council for the Arts and Alberta Foundation for the Arts. The creation of this 2020 chamber version was further supported by a special Canada Council grant.

Designed to feature ESO Principal Horn Allene Hackleman and Assistant Principal Horn Megan Evans, it was inspired both by their wonderful individual musicianship and the fabulous way they play together.

Reflections by composer John McPherson:
“It seems that people are strongly drawn either to the ocean or to the mountains. Allene, Megan, and I fall into the ‘mountain camp’. Combine that with how the horn has always been the ideal instrument for representing the majesty of nature and the fact that the writing of this piece took place mainly in a studio/cabin tucked in the woods at the Banff Centre looking out to the iconic Mount Rundle, and you have an explanation for the subtitle and imagery.

The 1st movement, Sunrise, represents the mountain valley coming to life. It begins with the dark stillness of night slowly being melted by a glowing mountain.

In the 2nd movement, Rundle, we are invited to expand our time-scale and imagine the impossibly slow, pressing, powerful song this mountain sings to us.

In the 3rd movement, Sunset, Night Sky, the clear blue sky gradually darkens and points of lights quietly materialize; slowly, at first, then accelerating until we are overwhelmed and reduced to reverential awe. Mt. Rundle is now a mighty shadow sailing across an ocean of stars.”
