About Gol Gumbaz
The word "Gol Gumbaz," translates to meaning of a circular dome. This monument is situated in city of Bijapur in the state of Karnataka.
Gol Gumbaz houses the tomb of the sultan Mohd. Adil Shah, who was the former sultan of Bijapur city. it took almost 20 years to complete the construction of this gigantic structure and the construction was started by the sultan himself as he wanted a grand tomb for himself after his death. the tomb has 4 minars, each minar has 7 floors with staircases to reach the top of the tomb. one can have a Birdseye view of the Bijapur city from the top.
The circular dome of Gol Gumbaz is in fact the second largest dome in the world after St. peters basilica in the Vatican city. the most peculiar thing about this dome is that the central portion of it stands without any pillars support.
Gol Gumbaz is also called as black Taj Mahal or the Taj Mahal of South India.
The whispering gallery, which is on the upper portion of the dome, is one of the most striking features of this monument. any whispers made inside the gallery echoes back 7 times.
This monument is currently under Archeological Survey of India and the entrance ticket for visiting the tomb is Rs 20.
September to March months would be the best time to visit Bijapur as the weather would be pleasant otherwise the summers pretty hot in Bijapur.
