Come walking with me around Ferrara, a medieval town in the Emilia Romagna region of Northern Italy.
This beautiful city is blessed with incredible architecture and a strong cultural and artistic presence.
UNESCO named Ferrara's old center a World Heritage Site.
Ferrara features a myriad of beautiful historical buildings:
the "Palazzo dei Diamanti" entire exterior is covered in more than 8,500 faceted marble blocks, and contains the National Gallery.
The Castle Estense is a beautiful structure that has stood since medieval times, located in the centre of the historic old town, it's surrounded entirely by a moat.
The 12th-century Duomo, Ferrara's Cathedral, is stunning, it's front facade has a combination of Romanesque and Renaissance styles and features a series of ornate arches and decoration.
Most of the popular attractions and things to do in Ferrara are located in the "Centro Storico", the historic center, that was enclosed by the old town walls. At the heart of this is the long Piazza Trento e Trieste, with the castle at one end and the cathedral forming one entire side.
Here in the square we find the Ducal Palace of the Este lords, the palace of the bishops, and the "Palazzo della Ragione", seat of the civil authorities.
Ferrara narrow and picturesque streets make you feel as though you've stepped back into the Middle Ages, expecially while walking along the "Via delle Volte", where under foot you have rounded cobblestones, and overhead rooms and passageways between buildings that form a series of arched tunnels.
