How to check and add water to your car battery. Low water in your battery can cause the electrolyte to become too concentrated leading sulphated battery plates which decreases the battery’s durability and lifespan. Many batteries have a way to check and add water. Some have large plastic caps, in this case each cell has a removable plug. I prefer disconnecting and removing the battery from the vehicle. A wash is recommended if it’s dirty and to reduce the chance of contamination. #mechanictips #automaintenance #battery

You can see the level of the fluid through the side of the case and reference to the level markings. Checking the level will vary between batteries.

Using an adjustable wrench or pliers, each of the plugs are removed, they simply screw in.

Looking inside, you can see some of the plates are exposed and not covered by acid.

Only add distilled water, and fill each cell until it comes to the upper-level line. Each cell must be filled individually, they do not connect. Do not overfill.

Once done, reinstall those caps and tighten them.

The battery can then be installed back into the vehicle.
