Innovation is the process of introducing novel ideas into use.
Within research, innovative study designs and approaches to recruitment and delivery can improve speed and efficiency of trials, shorten drug development timelines and discover new treatments faster.
Since the coronavirus pandemic began many research study innovations have accelerated our understanding of Covid-19, improved patient treatment and protected us from the disease.
Since 2020 over 92 studies have been prioritised by the Government and badged as Urgent Public Health Research.
The NIHR, Public Health England, UKRI, the HRA, MHRA and others have collaborated to prioritise these studies and accelerate decision making, ethics and regulatory approvals.
Platform studies like REMAP-CAP and RECOVERY use their unique study design to create multiple treatments to be repurposed and tested against each other simultaneously, resulting in discoveries that common drugs like Hydrocortisone, Dexamethasone and Tocilizumab can boost Covid-19 survival and recovery rates.
Five new National Patient Recruitment Centres were launched, boosting the UK’s capacity to deliver large late-phase commercial clinical studies, making it easier and quicker to deliver commercial research in our NHS.
A number of which helped to recruit to the NOVAVAX Covid-19 vaccine study, the largest ever double blind placebo controlled study in the UK, just one of a number of studies to recruit participants from the NHS Covid-19 Vaccine Research Registry.
The registry allows people to be contacted by researchers about taking part in vaccine studies, and has over 450,000 sign ups.
Embracing digital innovations within non-Covid research has also helped carry out study visits and tests during the pandemic. Remote monitoring devices, video appointments and fully virtual studies allow research to happen safely.
Together we’re building a faster, more effective, more resilient clinical research environment.
