US Defence Secretary William Cohen held talks with Indonesia's President Suharto on Wednesday (14/01) in an attempt to help stabilise the economic crisis in the world's fourth most populous nation. Cohen was expected to reinforce the message that Indonesia must adhere to the conditions of a 43-billion-dollar IMF bailout.
The United States, along with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), wants Indonesia to lower protective tariffs, break up import and distribution monopolies and reform the country's banking system.
