In this episode, Barry discusses the Rummynose Tetra.
These amazing fish are a favorite of aquarists due to their "mine canary" abilities! The deep red of these tetra's faces will fade out if organic wastes in the aquarium reach toxic levels, alerting aquarists that their water parameters need to be adjusted. Their adult size is 2 inches long, so they need at least a 20 gallon tank and to be kept in groups of at least 6. Their natural habitat is very acidic because of decaying organic matter in the water. These fish will be best kept in a tank with a pH below 7.0. While these fish can be a bit more sensitive, their behavior and coloration make them a worthwhile addition to an established tank.
