Salzburg is a very attractive city with overwhelmingly Baroque architecture inside the city centre (Altstadt). Salzburg means in German the fortress of Salt. It is the capital of the state of Salzburg in Austria and has a population of 160,000. Salzburg was founded by the Romans and it became a seat of the prince-archbishops in 798. The fortress of Salzburg (Hohensalzburg) is one of the biggest medieval fortresses in the world and dates from the 11th century. Altstadt, the historic center of Salzburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Salzburg was the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
