ARGENTINA SOCCER
Libertadores Cup group one match. Rosario Central v Independiente draw 0-0.
Despite a home ground advantage, and the backing of most of a 40 thousand-strong crowd, Rosario Central only managed a scoreless draw with Independiente in Argentina on Saturday (1/8).
The match, part of the Libertadores Cup group one competition, was hardly a sparkling exhibition of football, but was a game Rosario Central should have won.
Rosario started well, and in the early part of the match looked set to overrun Independiente with pace and skill in front of goal. But the side failed to transfer its early promise onto the scoreboard.
Just two minutes into the match, Independiente's goalkeeper Islas had to take the ball off Galloni's boot to stop the latter scoring. It was the start of a busy day for Islas... not long after he had to block a header from Balbis and then, a few minutes later, watched a Rosario Central attack end with a rebound off the post.
Erba and Clausen did well for a busy Independiente defence, but the Rosario side was so much in control of the match that their slower rivals frequently had to resort to fouls to stop them.
Independiente did however manage to break through the opposition defence several times in the second half, when Rosario found it difficult to maintain its supremacy.
The scoreless draw left Venezuela's Tachira at the head of group one with the competition half-way through.
