STORYLINE:
Thousands of protesters were gathering in Athens on Wednesday as workers across Greece launched a 24-hour anti-austerity strike, crippling transport and other public services.
The strike was timed to coincide with the start of the government's battle to push last-ditch cost-cutting reforms through parliament.
The government needs to pass a new 2012-2015 austerity programme worth 28 (b) billion euro (40.5 (b) billion US dollars) this month - or face being cut off from continued funding from a 110 (b) billion euro package of rescue loans from European countries and the International Monetary Fund.
A group of 6,500 protesters from a Communist union held a rally in central Athens, from where they were planning to march to join thousands more protesters in Syntagma Square.
Protesters have been camping out in the square outside the parliament building, where the struggling government is seeking to push through the cutbacks needed to secure international rescue loans.
Police said some 4,500 people chanted slogans as a group of protesters tried to blockade Parliament ahead of the afternoon committee-level debate.
Another union demonstration was expected later on Wednesday.
Such marches have often turned violent in the past, and some 5,000 police will be deployed to keep the peace.
Some of Athens' main tourist sites, including the Acropolis, were closed to visitors.
