Dr. Rekha Thotte consultant gynaecologist at Currae Gynaec IVF Birthing Hospital, Thane explains what is Colposcopy and how a Colposcope helps examine the cervical and vaginal area for cervical cancer and other disease.
What is a Colposcopy? | Procedure, Risks and Results
Colposcopy is a way for your doctor to use a special magnifying device to look at your vulva, vagina , and cervix . If a problem is seen during colposcopy, a small sample of tissue (biopsy) may be taken from the cervix or from inside the opening of the cervix (endocervical canal).
Colposcopy at a Glance
- Test to find abnormal cells on the cervix
- Sometimes performed with biopsy
- Helps determine if further treatment is necessary
Why Do Women Have Colposcopies?
A colposcopy may be used when
- you have abnormal Pap or HPV test results
- your cervix looks abnormal during a GYN exam
- you need to find the cause of unexplained bleeding or other problems
A colposcopy procedure is used to determine whether more tests or treatments are needed.
How is colposcopy done?
A colposcope is a microscope that resembles a pair of binoculars. The instrument has a range of magnification lenses. It also has color filters that allow the physician to detect tiny abnormal blood vessels on the cervix. The colposcope is used to examine the vaginal walls and cervix through the vaginal opening.
- The first step of the procedure is examining the vulva and vagina for signs of genital warts or other growths. (Genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), which is a sexually transmitted virus that can cause cervical cancer.)
- A Pap smear is then taken.
- The cervix is inspected and the special tests are done (see below).
Colposcopy is a safe procedure with no complications other than vaginal spotting of blood.
Biopsy Accompanying a Colposcopy
If you are having a biopsy, how the procedure feels will depend on the location being tested.
1) Cervical Biopsy
You may feel some pressure or cramping, but a cervical biopsy is generally painless.
2) Vaginal Biopsy
Most of the vagina has very little sensation, so you won’t feel pain during a biopsy. The lower part of the vagina has more sensation and your doctor may use a local anesthetic before proceeding.
Colposcopy results
The colposcopist will usually be able to tell straight away if there are abnormal cells in your cervix. Biopsy results usually take about four weeks and a copy will be sent to both you and your GP in the post.
About 4 out of 10 women who have a colposcopy have a normal result. A normal result means your cervix appears healthy and you have a low risk of developing cervical cancer before your next screening test. Depending on your age, you'll be invited for a cervical screening appointment in three or five years.
About 6 out of 10 women who have a colposcopy have abnormal cells in their cervix. This doesn't mean they are cancerous cells, but they can sometimes develop into cancer if left untreated.
Very rarely, some women are found to have cervical cancer during a colposcopy. If you have cancer, you'll be quickly referred to a specialist team for care and treatment.
As cervical cancer detected through screening tends to be diagnosed at an early stage, the outcome of treatment tends to be better. This is why it's important for women to attend their screening test when invited.
