Welcome to season three on the Wilderstead! We are now into our third year building our 16 acre homestead in northern Ontario. We are surrounded by wilderness on the shores of Lake Superior, in the heart of the Canadian Shield.
Developing our property has been exciting and a lot of work. We had to restart from scratch on a tight budget with new greenhouses, new gardens and even new livestock. But we are happy to have a location with the climate and natural resources that we require to gather, grow, heat and cook for our path to self reliance.
Our channel focuses on not only the usuals - growing food from seed throughout the four seasons, raising and entertaining livestock come rain or snow, canning and cooking the food we grow - But also, alternative energy and heating sources to reduce our dependancy on the grid. Foraging and catching food. Sourcing and repurposing reclaimed materials and other items to fulfill homestead needs, and simple appreciating the beauty of our surroundings.
Most importantly, we try not to take it all too seriously.
We hope to inspire folks to get out of their comfort zone, and leave their normal lives behind to try something new.
