As a goaltender you are effectively faced with two fundamental scoring chances: Clean and Dirty.

Clean scoring chances can be described as well defined, well structured attacks at the net. Things like 2-1, 3-2 and breakaways are “clean scoring chances”.

Dirty scoring chances can be described as chaotic, unpredictable and sometimes surprising. Heavy traffic, bumping, dangerous loose rebounds in the kill zone are examples of “dirty chances”.

Many, many goalies thrive in the clean version but struggle managing success in chaos.
