(24 Nov 2021) University students in Sulaymaniyah in Iraq lit fires on Wednesday outside the offices of Kurdish political parties as they vented their anger about the ongoing suspension of an allowance.
The protesters started blazes at the offices of the Goran Political movement and stormed the main base of the Kurdistan Patriotic Union.
The Goran movement and PUK are two of the three main parties that constitute the Kurdistan Regional Government.
Most of the protesters were university students who are demanding the Kurdistan Regional Government pay their student allowances, after they were cut off when Islamic State group controlled various areas of Iraq.
The student's benefits were suspended because of the cost of the war against the Islamic State group and a subsequent drop in oil revenues.
This year Kurdish authorities made higher revenues compared to previous years because of a surge in global oil prices.
University students in the Kurdish region used to get a monthly allowance of US$30 for students from the area and US$50 for students from other cities and towns.
