Mental skills training plays an important role in the recovery of an injured athlete. Find out what role the mental side plays and few tips to help you if you are dealing with an injury. My role as a mindset coach is three fold.
1. I work with athletes who put themselves into higher risk of getting injured due to their role within their sport or team. For example, an ice hockey enforcer. Their job is to get into the fights, and therefore they put themselves each night into a position to potentially get a concussion or other form of injury due to the nature of their position. So I would work with this type of athlete to help with the mental aspects that come up for them.
2. Helping an athlete through the injury process. Helping the athlete to move through the process of recovering from an injury. Helping them to grieve the loss of what might have been for them. Injuries are very difficult for an athlete, as their sport is the place they go to to deal with stress and issues, and now that is taken away when they need it the most. This can cause a lot of of stress for the athlete, so helping them deal with that is a big part of the job of a mental conditioning coach in the recovery from an injury.
3. Helping an athlete bounce back from an injury and not miss a beat. It can be very difficult when an athlete first comes back from an injury and my job is to help make the process as smooth as possible and help them recover. Any person who works on the physical side of injuries will tell you that the biggest factor is the mental side to recovery. The physical body will heal, but can the athlete bounce back mentally and not let it impact them.
