We hear about global events from a variety of sources, but how can we tell which reports are real and which are fake? What does the proliferation of fake news tell us about ourselves? Journalist Jim McBee makes his living from words and knows the power they have to influence us in positive and negative ways. He believes independent media outlets such as his own publication, The Ann magazine, are better suited to solve the problems of journalism in our fast-changing landscape than mainstream, corporate media.

Jim McBee is a co-founder of The Ann magazine, a monthly news magazine for Washtenaw County that’s in its sixth year. The Ann is the third startup print publication he’s been involved in. He’s been an editor, designer and supervisor in newspaper newsrooms across America. He believes solutions to journalism’s problems will come from independent rather than mainstream, corporate media.
