UNGUIDED TREKKING IN GEORGIA, SKIRTING ALONG THE FOOTHILLS OF THE CAUCASUS MOUNTAINS

The Mestia to Ushguli trek in Svaneti, Georgia, is around 60km long and takes four days to complete. The Svaneti province is located on the southern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains, the rugged expanse that separates Georgia and Russia.

The hiking trails in this region are spectacular, offering generous panoramas of mountain peaks, alpine forests and medieval villages. If you undertake the trek in Autumn (as we did) you'll be lucky enough to catch the glorious colours of the Georgian fall!

The Mestia to Ushguli hike is not overly difficult although you will need to climb Chkhunderi Pass (2722m) and ford the river Adishchala on your third day of hiking. There are homestays located in every village between Mestia and Ushguli, which cost $15 USD per person. Homestays include dinner, breakfast, Wi-Fi and hot showers. However, if you're craving a more grassroots experience there are plenty of unmarked clearings along the trekking route to set up camp for the night.

The cheapest way to get from Tbilisi to Mestia is by first catching a train from Tbilisi to Zugdidi ($10 USD), then a minivan from Zugdidi to Mestia ($10 USD). The trip should take around 12hrs in total. Mestia is a lovely little town situated on the banks of the pristine Mulkhra river. It's home to many cafes, hotels and restaurants and is well deserving of a few nights stay even as a stand alone trip.

DAY 3: Adishi to Iprari (07:43)
DAY 4: Iprari to Ushguli (10:43)
OUTRO: Ushguli to Mestia (12:41)
