(28 Jan 2020) PRYCE ON OSCARS NOMINATION: 'I WAS LAUGHING AND CRYING AT THE SAME TIME'
When Jonathan Pryce heard he was nominated for an Oscar, he was a bit caught off guard.
"I had a shower, I came out the shower and it had started. And I was kind of half listening to it. And I heard Anthony McCarten's name being nominated for our screenplay. And I let out a big cheer and my wife was downstairs. She said, 'What is it?' And I said, 'No, no, no, it's not—it's for Anthony for his script. You won't be hearing me cheering again. Don't worry,' said "The Two Popes" star. "And the Internet was in and out. And when it came back, I heard Leonardo DiCaprio's name and I thought, 'Wait a minute, that's my category.' And then my name, and I let out another big cheer. And then I found I was kind of laughing and crying at the same time."
In the film, Pryce plays Jorge Bergoglio, who is the future Pope Francis. Anthony Hopkins co-stars as Pope Benedict XVI.
Pryce, who said he can be cynical about nominations, admitted to enjoying this moment but said winning an award isn't his goal.
"I think it's just a bonus. It's not what I strive for. This particular prize is very nice because it's voted for by a huge range of the industry, but it is all your peers and your colleagues who vote. And that's always very good," said Pryce. "It's almost (been) 50 years since I started work. So to have this now is—it's a good feeling and I'm not too cynical about it."
The Oscars will be handed out Feb. 9 in Los Angeles.
