Let’s instead look at what modern medicine can offer for osteoarthritis. I like to look at it as a two-step approach. First, we need to get you and your knee or hip out of that pro-inflammatory state. Then, we need to rebuild the joint and try to repair the damage.
Exosomes are the newest and most exciting treatment available to us. You’ve heard of stem cells. Stem cells work by releasing extracellular vesicles, or exosomes. With stem cells, a surgeon usually harvests them from your pelvis or other part of your body, usually by a surgical procedure. But the number of stem cells in these preparations is limited, at least in the U.S. Instead, you can get injections of millions of exosomes, usually taken from amniotic fluid, so there is no surgical procedure to get them. Exosomes stimulate the production of the extracellular matrix and stimulate the proliferation of chondrocytes. Early research has shown they can protect the arthritic joint by promoting cartilage repair, inhibiting inflammation of the joint lining, and aiding in subchondral bone remodeling.
If you have arthritis – and you will, as three-quarters of adults develop some form of arthritis as you get older, no matter how hard you work to prevent it – talk to your doctor about ALL your options, not just joint replacement, cleanup surgery or cortisone shots.
