This is the first of three videos I made today showing how to fixture the strut housing to prepare for strut insert removal; how to heat up and remove the strut insert; how to assess the tpype of bump stop present and how short you can make it (some measurement on your part may be required to do this correctly).
Fat Cat Motorsports and Shaikh Jalal Ahmad assume no liability for incorrect use of this information. You perform any modifications to your vehicle suspension AT YOUR OWN RISK! Use Common Sense and if in doubt have a competent race preparation shop perform this work. This is an ADVANCED handling modification with possible repercussions to vehicle ride and safety. It is NOT RECOMMENDED for novice drivers or novice shadetree mechanics.
This procedure applies to any Bilstein inverted strut asesmbly such as an OEM-strut, aftermarket Bilstein HD, Bilstein Sport, PSS9, or PSS10. Some earlier vehicles had crimped / staked bottom nuts / washers that require more careful machining and removal procedures. We are not yet set up to with these applications at this time but if a customer is highly motivated to work with us, we can entertain the possibility.
Take care to not marr the chrome surface on the strut insert. When performing the heating procedure (illustrated in the third video) use clean, gloved hands and a clean shop or terry cloth towel to protect the paint on the strut housing when securing it in a bench vise.
Grab onto a solid metal tab such as the sway bar mounts to instead of the strut body whenever possible.
CAUTION! Watch the entire video playlist before performing any modifications. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND you take the time to carefully measure the suspension travel and carefully monitor interference between wheel/tire and fender or body work. This will ensure whatever bump stop and packer length you use will be correct to provide sufficient safety when the vehicle encounters an extreme bump or other unexpected situation. You can follow the steps in as indicated in Tab 1 of the Big Kahuna Suspension Characterization Excel document published here:
