The Kopeshwar temple located at Khidrapur, is around 60km away from the city at Khidrapur village and is known for its magnificent swarga mandapa and its beautiful stone carvings
Legend has it that lord Shiva was furious when sati Parvati jumped into Daksha’s sacrifice. Lord Vishnu then brought Shiva to the temple to calm him down. Hence the temple got the name as ‘Kopeshwar’ which translates to the furious god. The locals call Shiva Kopeshwar Mahadev.
The unique feature of the temple is that both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are in linga form.
Inscriptions in the temple mention that it was built by the Shilahara king Gandaraditya, Vijayaditya and Bhoj-II between 1109 and 1178 AD.
The Temple is divided into four major portions — the Swargamandapam, Sabhamandapam, Garbha griha and Antharal Kaksha.
The swarga mandapa of Kopeshwar is a hidden gem. The mandapa has 48 carved pillars and is open to sky. Its an enchanting experience for photographers.
The Antharal Kaksha is full of beautiful Madanika images.
