(30 Jun 2014) Nine people were shot and injured after being caught in the crossfire when a gun battle erupted between two men on touristy Bourbon Street, in the French Quarter, in the US port city of New Orleans in Louisiana, police said on Sunday.
Two victims were critically wounded.
New Orleans Police Chief Ronal Serpas said six victims were hospitalised in stable condition.
The other victim's condition was not available.
Some of them were tourists. Their names have not been released.
The shooting occurred early on Sunday at 2:45 am local time (6:45 GMT).
Serpas said at a news conference in the French Quarter that the victims were shot "by two cowardly young men trying to hurt one other."
"This is a heinous crime, this is two young men, both armed with fire arms, who chose to settle a dispute between themselves without a moment's care for anyone else," he said.
Serpas called on residents, businesses and witnesses who may have video footage, including any from surveillance cameras, to contact police.
Bourbon Street is a nightly swirl of bright neon and tourists, usually with beverages in hand.
A blend of jazz joints, strip clubs, bars and restaurants, Bourbon Street has everything from four-star dining to sex shows.
It was the third major shooting on Bourbon Street in the last three years.
