It's a bit of a slap-dash effort this time around, but here is a short travelogue of a recent visit to a few of the castles that make up the Eagles' Nests chain of fortifications in Poland. We came up from the south from government owned geological survey site (sorry I can't give you that as a start point, but it was a good hike) Anyway, I was speaking off the cuff here (and in a lot of wind and sometimes rain) so apologies if the history is inexact, but here are a couple of wiki links to get you started if you want to do a bit of reading:
