A small study of 34 participants between 40 and 61 years of age showed that higher amounts of visceral abdominal fat was associated with an increased risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease. A summary of the data was published in Healio(R) online.
The researchers used abdominal MRI to assess visceral fat volume and also tested glucose tolerance and insulin resistance. Those with obesity had lower white matter in parts of their brain involved in memory formation. Alzheimer’s Disease can be thought of as type 3 diabetes, being linked to insulin resistance, elevated blood sugars, inflammation, and obesity. So losing fat is not only good for the body, but apparently also for the brain.
