On the first of December 2023, I received an email I was selected for a 9-month deployment in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan.

Before leaving, I had mixed feelings about going to this part of the world.
But from the moment I stepped off the plane, I was surprised by the diversity of the region.

Talking with locals, experiencing their culture, and feeling thousands years of history changed my view on this country. My time here was far different from what I initially expected, and it’s a story I want to share.

But first, I want you to forget everything you’ve heard about Iraq.

This documentary film offers a unique insight into a six-month adventure in Iraqi Kurdistan, during which the author discovers the rich culture and traditions of the local population. Through personal stories and authentic footage, the documentary brings to light the heritage of ancient Assyria, the traditions of the Yezidis, Zoroastrians and other religions of the region, and shows experiences such as climbing the highest accessible mountain in Iraq (Halgurd) surrounded by minefields. However, the film also reveals the dark side of the region, where political instability and armed conflict affect people's daily lives. This documentary is not just about Kurdistan; it is about humanity, resilience and the desire for peace in the heart of chaos.
