Planning a solo canoe trip down the River Wye with your dog might initially seem fraught with problems but here’s a few easy cut price solutions to use. Firstly Tresseck Campsite at Hoarwithy is a perfect midway base to use. It’s a convenient picturesque site by the river, sensibly priced with boat launching included for guests and well maintained facilities, fires are permitted, cafe does breakfast and coffee some weekends plus there’s a pub, village shop (not open some Mondays and Tuesdays) and bus stop next to the road entrance.
Then Hye Bus Taxi service is good for getting your canoe to the actual start point and they take dogs but the long drive is expensive (£50) if not shared.
The good news is local buses also connect Tresseck Camp site to Hereford, Ross on Wye, and Symonds Yat Monmouth at a fraction of the cost of taxis. You may get lucky and blag a lift from Wye Canoes who are based on site if they have their own boats to transport that day. You can usually arrange to leave your canoe at landings, campsites on the river and canoe hire firms storage areas.
