The common dog or wood violet - viola riviniana is a native species often seen in woodland in Spring. Looks similar to a pansy.
It attracts the caterpillars of several rare fritillary butterflies and is considered important because of this.
It is unscented whereas the similar sweet violet (viola adorata) is sweet scented. Wild violets are edible and can be made into sugared violets by coating them with egg white and sugar.
