Japan has made history by launching LignoSat, the world's first wooden satellite, to the International Space Station in November 2024. This innovative 4-inch cube, made from magnolia wood, aims to test how wood performs in space over a six-month mission. The project, developed by Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry, could revolutionize satellite construction by offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional aluminum satellites. Unlike metal satellites that leave harmful debris, LignoSat will burn up completely upon re-entry, marking a significant step toward sustainable space exploration.
