The covered shopping center Zuidplein is one of the most important works by the Rotterdam architect Hermanus Dirk Bakker (August 28, 1915 - October 12, 1988) and was a very modern concept for its time.
The shopping center was built from 1962 to 1972 on a largely undeveloped site between the metro viaduct and a number of wide thoroughfares. However, the New Church had to be demolished for it.
The shopping center was opened in 1972 by Mies Bouwman. At that time, part of the Zuidplein still consisted of shop stalls.
Between 1993 and 1995, the shopping center was expanded in an easterly direction by approximately 11,000 m² by architects Bakker & Partners in collaboration with the architects Bakker & Partners. Chile Verhoeff.
Between 1999 and 2003, the interior was renovated without significant expansion by JHK Architecten from Utrecht i.s.m. Greig + Stephenson Architects of London.
The chaotic central square was made quieter by replacing the jumble of old kiosks with two new kiosks.
With an area of 55,000 square meters, this is the most important shopping center for Rotterdam South and the municipalities on the southern edge of Rotterdam. In 2017, the mall had about 165 stores.
It is one of the largest covered shopping centers in the Netherlands. The mall attracts about 10 million visitors a year.
