Throughout the Middle Ages, beds were of great importance as pieces of furniture. Poorer individuals had simple straw beds covered with blankets, the more affluent enjoyed beds made of rope, and the wealthy had rich tent beds decorated with silk and velvet curtains for warmth and privacy. Rope beds, however, posed the problem of the ropes loosening and causing sleepers to sit upright.
