Amy Braverman Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology Session Chair Intro: Data Science Challenges in Earth and Space Science George Djorgovski California Institute of Technology Cyberspace, the Final Frontier The exponential growth of the computational power, data volumes, rates, complexity, and information content is transforming the way science is done. This opens great new opportunities for a scienti c discovery, but also new challenges that are common to all disciplines, thus representing a natural evolution of the scienti c method in the era of an exponential data abundance. The challenges can be technological, methodological, sociological, and educational. I will illustrate them with examples from the data-intensive astronomy, including both some lessons learned, and some speci c topics that can lead to further fruitful collaborations between the domain scientists, statisticians, and machine learning professionals.
