In today’s video, we’re explaining, in depth, BMW’s badging and model lineup organization! We’ll explain what all the numbers and letters on the back of a BMW mean, and how they represent the cars’ series and engine. This topic has been the source of many questions, both in our comments sections, and from clients in person, so hopefully this video will provide some clarity. For the best understanding of the topic, we of course recommend watching the whole video, but here is a brief summary that might help as a quick reference!
For the 228i xDrive Gran Coupé: the first “2” represents the series that the car belongs to. The “28” designates the engine size/output (2.0L 4-cyl, 228hp). The “i” represents gasoline direct injection. xDrive = all-wheel drive. Gran Coupé indicates that the car has 4 doors and a sloping roof line.
This “key” works for all non-SUV models, non-m and non EV models. The first number is the series, the next two indicate the engine, the “i” indicates gas power, and xDrive means all wheel drive. For SUV models, the model (equivalent to series) is designated by the number following the X (X3, X7). The engine designation comes after the word xDrive (or sDrive for RWD models). For example, X3 xDrive30i: “X3” is the model, “xDrive 30i” indicates all-wheel drive with a 2.0L 4-cyl engine w/ 248hp.
Importantly, all even-numbered series (2,4,6) are offered in different body styles (Coupé, Gran Coupé, and Convertible), whereas odd-numbered series (3,5,7) are one body style only (sedan). For SUVs, the even numbers (X4, X6) are the slope-back roof versions of the traditionally shaped SUVs that are named using the odd numbers that directly precedes it. For example, the X4 is the slope back roof version of the X3. The same applies to X5 and X6.
M Models come in two tiers: M Performance and M. M Performance cars are represented by the letter M followed by two or three numbers (M340i, X6 M60i). M cars are the highest performing cars that BMW makes, and these are badged with an M followed by only one number (M3, M8). In the case of SUVs, the M is followed by nothing (X4M, X5M).
Electric cars are badged with an “i” followed by the series (i7, i4, i5). They follow the exact same naming convention as the SUVs, just replace the “X” with an “i”.
Engine designations key is below:
28i = 2.0L I4 turbo (228-241 horsepower)
30i = 2.0L I4 turbo (248 - 255 horsepower)
M35i = 2.0L I4 turbo (302-313 horsepower)
40i = 3.0L I6 turbo (375 horsepower)
M40i = 3.0L I6 turbo (382 horsepower)
60i = 4.4L V8 twin-turbo (536 horsepower)
M60i = 4.4L V8 twin-turbo (523 horsepower)
M2/3/4 = 3.0L I6 twin turbo (473-503 horsepower)
M5/6/8 = 4.4L V8 twin turbo (600-617 horsepower)
