The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was envisioned as a strategy to end migration from rural areas by providing deprived households with 100 days of work every year. However, even though the people had heard of this flagship government initiative, they had no idea of how to obtain work under it.
PACS has been working to increase awareness about, demand for and participation in MGNREGA, especially amongst socially excluded groups through various initiatives including running a Work Demand Campaign, setting up MGNREGA help centres and developing an inclusive social audit model.
As a result, 851,778 people have been supported to apply for MGNREGA work, 1,243,082 assets (such as ponds, wells and roads) have been built under MGNREGA to benefit socially excluded communities and PACS-supported MGNREGA workers have received 1,296,261,872 rupees in wages.
