34 Latvian soldiers, members of Operational Mentor and Liaison Team, fulfilled their service duties in Eastern Afghanistan, Kunar Province, just few kilometers from the Pakistan border. Along with 11 U.S. Michigan National Guard soldiers they trained senior staff and soldiers of Afghan National Army Unit and were located in places the Unit carried out its combat tasks.
In December 2009 Latvian Television (LTV) News Service journalist Zane Peneze and operator Girts Straustins got an insight into soldiers' daily life.
"It is not an easy duty. The Afghan battalion, the Latvian soldiers trained, was established just recently and had almost no combat experience. In the mountainous terrain a real war took place and it was not just a peacekeeping mission. Latvian soldiers often had to train Afghans in the battle field while repelling attacks and leading Afghan soldiers. They needed a real courage," says Zane Peneze.
Impressions gained in Afghanistan now are reflected in the movie "Afghanistan. Scholl in the Battlefied". In collaboration with LTV we offer it to visitors of Latvian Armed Forces website and those who visit social media.
