In the early hours of May 29, 1914, the RMS Empress of Ireland collided with the Norwegian collier Storstad in thick fog.
The RMS Empress of Ireland is always compared to the Titanic, and its sinking was just as deadly. In fact, the Empress sank even faster than the Titanic, taking just 14 minutes to go down.
The disaster claimed the lives of 1,012 people, making it the worst peacetime maritime disaster in Canadian history. This video tells the story of this tragic event and the survivors who managed to escape.
