Joseph Mutero and Zvishavane Sounds came out of the same Mashava Mines system that gave us Devera Ngwena. Like Jonah Moyo and his band, this was a band formed to entertain the locals, and tied to a slave contract that took all their earnings in exchange for instruments and a puny wage.
Among members of this band was one Gift Amuli, then a young electrical apprentice. He’s since become one of my favourite Sungura artistes.
Story-telling was huge back in the day, and it was a form that the likes of Marko Sibanda later milked great success. A follow up to this was another hilarious tale, Mapenzi Haaperi.
Here, Mutero tells one of the funniest stories you will ever hear. It’s not even how funny the story itself is – it’s how Mutero tells it that kills it.
